Liaquatabad acid attack unmasked: husband hired Rickshaw driver to target wife

KARACHI: Police have solved the Liaquatabad No. 5 acid attack case within 48 hours, arresting a man accused of carrying out the attack and his alleged mastermind, who investigators say was the victim’s husband.

The incident occurred near Noor Islam Mosque in an inner street of Liaquatabad No. 5, where 28-year-old Araj was travelling on a motorcycle with her husband, Awais, who was reportedly taking her to work. Police said the motorcycle slowed near a speed breaker when a man allegedly waiting nearby approached from behind and threw acid at the woman before fleeing.

Speaking exclusively to Minute Mirror, SSP District Central Dr. Muhammad Imran Khan said the investigation established that the incident was allegedly not a random street attack but a planned assault.

According to the SSP, investigators reviewed extensive CCTV footage and used technical surveillance to identify the alleged attacker as Bilal, a rickshaw driver and resident of Liaquatabad. During interrogation, Bilal allegedly told investigators that Awais had paid him to attack his wife.

Police said the suspected motive was linked to domestic conflict and allegations made by the husband against his wife. Both Awais and Bilal have been arrested, while investigators are examining the circumstances surrounding the alleged agreement and payment.

Liaquatabad Police registered FIR No. 567/2026 under Section 336-B of the Pakistan Penal Code shortly after the incident. A special investigation team was subsequently formed under the supervision of SSP Central.

Police said evidence recovered during the investigation includes the motorcycle allegedly used during reconnaissance and a bottle believed to be connected with the attack. Investigators are also tracing the alleged financial transaction between the two suspects and examining call-data records and other technical evidence.

The victim remains under treatment, and police said her statement has been recorded as part of the investigation.

SSP Dr Muhammad Imran Khan said the case was being pursued on the basis of forensic and technical evidence and that investigators would submit the challan after completing the remaining legal and investigative requirements.

Police are also investigating where the chemical used in the attack was obtained and whether any other person was involved in planning or facilitating the assault.

Both suspects remain in police custody as investigators continue to examine the alleged money trail, communications and other evidence surrounding the case.
