ISLAMABAD: Police have arrested a suspect after a two-and-a-half-year-old girl who went missing from Shams Town was found dead in a wooded area within the jurisdiction of Noon Police Station.
According to police, the child was playing outside her home at around 2pm on September 22 but failed to return. Her mother subsequently approached police at approximately 11pm, prompting the registration of a case and the launch of a search operation.
SP Industrial Area Dr Ayaz Hussain said seven teams were formed to locate the missing child and conducted searches across Shams Town and surrounding areas.
Investigators reviewing CCTV footage reportedly spotted a man taking the child away from the area. Police identified the suspect as Kashif and, with the assistance of CCTV footage and other investigative sources, traced and arrested him.
Police said the suspect subsequently led investigators to a location approximately 1.5 kilometres from the child’s residence, where her body was recovered from a wooded area.
A senior investigating officer said the suspect had allegedly confessed to abducting and killing the child and identified the location where the body was found. Police are also investigating allegations that the child was sexually assaulted.
Officials said a medico-legal examination and post-mortem would determine the circumstances and cause of death and help establish whether sexual assault occurred.
The child’s body was shifted to a hospital for examination, while a court granted police five-day physical remand of the arrested suspect.
SP Ayaz Hussain said investigators were examining the case from all relevant angles and that further legal action would follow on the basis of evidence and the findings of the investigation.
The investigation remains ongoing, while the suspect will face due legal proceedings.
