Oscar-nominated film editor Elliot Graham dies at 50

The acclaimed editor, known for his work on major Hollywood films including Captain Marvel, Steve Jobs and No Time to Die, died by suicide on Saturday in Los Angeles, according to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner.

Graham built a respected career in the film industry over several decades, earning recognition for his sharp editing and contributions to critically acclaimed movies.

His Oscar nomination came for his editing work on Milk, the 2008 biographical drama based on the life of Harvey Milk, a pioneering American politician and LGBTQ+ rights activist.

Directed by Gus Van Sant, Milk follows the life and political career of Harvey Milk, who became the first openly gay person elected to public office in California after winning a seat on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors.

The film received widespread critical acclaim and earned eight nominations at the Academy Awards. It ultimately won two Oscars, with Sean Penn taking home the award for Best Actor for his portrayal of Harvey Milk. The movie also won Best Original Screenplay.

Graham’s editing played an important role in shaping the film’s emotional storytelling and bringing its historical narrative to the screen.

Following Graham’s death, Milk producer Dan Jinks paid tribute to the late editor and praised his contribution to the acclaimed film.

Jinks expressed his grief in a Facebook post, saying that Milk “wouldn’t have come together in the way it did” without Graham’s exceptional work.

Born in California, Graham went on to establish himself as one of the industry’s respected film editors. His career included collaborations on a wide range of projects across different genres, from major studio blockbusters to independent and critically acclaimed productions.

One of his most notable achievements came with the James Bond film No Time to Die. Graham won a BAFTA Award for Best Editing for his work on the 2021 blockbuster, which starred Daniel Craig in his final appearance as the iconic British spy.

The film was widely praised for its action sequences, visual style and emotional conclusion, with Graham’s editing helping shape the movie’s fast-paced storytelling.

Beyond his work as an editor, Graham also explored film and television production. He served as a producer on Trust, the 2018 FX drama series inspired by the Getty family and the kidnapping of John Paul Getty III.

His editing credits also included several high-profile films. Among them were Beasts of No Nation, the critically acclaimed drama directed by Cary Joji Fukunaga, and The Amazing Spider-Man 2, starring Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone.

Graham also worked on I Am Michael, a 2015 biographical drama starring James Franco, Emma Roberts and Zachary Quinto.

Throughout his career, Graham earned recognition for his ability to shape complex stories through editing and worked on projects featuring some of Hollywood’s most prominent filmmakers and actors.

His death marks a loss for the film community, with colleagues and collaborators remembering his contribution to the industry and the lasting impact of his work.
