A firefighter in the United Kingdom reportedly turned to ChatGPT for legal guidance after seeking to recover £40,000 he had given to his former girlfriend eventually representing himself in court.
Craig Titchner, 40, won a £200,000 jackpot on a Winter Wonderlines lottery scratch card in November 2019. In 2022, he gave £40,000 to his then-girlfriend, Heather Douglas a 37-year-old psychiatric nurse so that she could use her financial knowledge to invest the money on his behalf.
The court was reportedly told that the pair had agreed to put the money into Premium Bonds and share any returns generated from the investment.
However, after their relationship ended, Douglas allegedly refused to return the money. Titchner, a father of two and a Heathrow firefighter said he contacted legal professionals but was discouraged by the fees they quoted.
He subsequently decided to seek assistance from ChatGPT. According to Titchner, the AI chatbot provided step-by-step guidance on completing the necessary forms and helped him prepare to pursue the claim himself at Central London County Court.
Titchner reportedly told the court that representing himself was a risk, but he felt he had little to lose. He also said that without ChatGPT, he might not have been able to win the case.
Douglas, meanwhile, maintained that the £40,000 had been given to her as a gift. However, according to the report she was unable to establish that the money was a gift and did not provide her bank statements to the court.
The court subsequently ruled in Titchner’s favour last week according to the report.
Douglas also made allegations against Titchner, accusing him of controlling and harassing her. The report does not provide further details about those allegations or the court’s findings concerning them.
