US issues security alert for Americans in the Middle East as tension escalate

WASHINGTON: The United States has issued a fresh security warning for Americans in the Middle East as tensions between Saudi Arabia and Yemen’s Houthi movement intensify, raising concerns that the military confrontation could escalate rapidly.

The US State Department urged Americans currently in the region to exercise heightened vigilance and remain alert to sudden changes in the security environment. It also warned that people travelling to or through the Middle East could face flight cancellations, airspace closures and other travel disruptions.

The warning comes after a series of Houthi attacks and attempted attacks against Saudi territory. Saudi authorities said on Saturday that their air-defence systems intercepted and destroyed a ballistic missile launched towards Riyadh. Saudi officials also reported that attempted attacks targeted other locations, including Yanbu, Taif, Baysh and Farasan.

The Houthis, meanwhile, claimed they had targeted what they described as sensitive sites in Riyadh as well as an Aramco facility in Yanbu. The claims came amid a broader escalation in fighting involving the Houthis and Saudi Arabia.

The latest US alert warned that the Houthis have previously targeted civilian airports and stressed that the conflict has the potential to deteriorate quickly. Americans travelling in the region have been advised to closely monitor information from airports and airlines because operations could change with little notice.

The State Department has already maintained a Level 3 “Reconsider Travel” advisory for Saudi Arabia, citing risks linked to armed conflict, terrorism and missile and drone attacks. It separately advises Americans not to travel to areas near Saudi Arabia’s border with Yemen.

The warning comes against the backdrop of wider instability across the Middle East, with several countries facing security concerns and potential disruptions to air travel.

Recent attacks have also affected aviation activity around Riyadh. Reports said explosions and smoke were seen near King Khalid International Airport after the attempted missile strike, while some flights experienced delays and disruptions.

For American citizens already in the region, Washington has advised following instructions from local authorities and monitoring updates from the nearest US embassy or consulate.

With missile and drone attacks continuing to raise tensions, the latest American alert highlights growing concerns over the possibility of further escalation and its impact on civilians, airports and regional travel.
