Wasim Akram questions grand welcome for Razaullah after England defeat

Former Pakistan fast bowler Wasim Akram has questioned the grand reception given to young pacer Razaullah after his impressive Test debut against England, saying the celebrations came despite Pakistan suffering a 3-0 series defeat.

Razaullah was handed his Test debut in the third and final match of the series after Pakistan made several changes to its squad following defeats at Headingley and Lord’s. The youngster had previously gained experience mainly through the Pakistan Super League.

The young fast bowler made an immediate impact in his first Test appearance. He claimed four wickets in England’s first innings before producing an aggressive 81-run knock in Pakistan’s second innings. His performance helped Pakistan avoid an innings defeat in the match.

Following his impressive debut, Razaullah received a large welcome when he returned to Pakistan. A crowd gathered at Islamabad International Airport, with people presenting him with bouquets and garlands to celebrate his performance.

Akram, however, questioned the scale of the reception during a charity event in Manchester. While acknowledging Razaullah’s individual performance, he pointed out that Pakistan had suffered a heavy series defeat against England.

Akram said the reaction reflected a broader issue with the way performances are viewed in Pakistan. He argued that a strong individual display should be recognised, but celebrations should also take the overall team result into account.

The former captain also criticised what he described as an acceptance of mediocrity in Pakistan cricket. He stressed that changing coaches or administrators would not automatically solve the team’s problems because the players ultimately remain responsible for performances on the field.

Razaullah’s debut nevertheless emerged as one of the few positives for Pakistan during the England series. His four-wicket haul and 81-run innings showcased his potential and gave the national side a promising new pace option.
