Xi Jinping to visit US for talks with Donald Trump

Chinese President Xi Jinping is set to visit the United States this week for talks with US President Donald Trump, with Beijing confirming the visit on Monday.

According to a Chinese government statement, Xi will be in the United States from September 23 to 25. The visit is expected to focus on major issues affecting relations between the world’s two largest economies.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun said Xi and Trump would hold an in-depth discussion on China-US relations, as well as broader issues related to global peace and development.

Guo said Beijing would seek to strengthen dialogue and cooperation with Washington while managing differences between the two countries. He added that China wanted to further develop a stable and constructive strategic relationship with the United States.

The meeting comes as tensions remain between Beijing and Washington over trade, technology and wider strategic matters.

A US official confirmed that Trump would personally welcome Xi at Joint Base Andrews on Wednesday. The two leaders are expected to hold formal talks the following day.

Trump previously indicated that he planned to discuss a wide range of issues with Xi. The meeting will take place against the backdrop of continued disagreements between the two countries.

Trade is expected to be among the major topics. Although Beijing and Washington have maintained a tariff truce for nearly a year, they have yet to reach a permanent trade agreement.

Taiwan is also likely to remain an important issue in the discussions. The two countries have sharply different positions on the island, with tensions over Taiwan continuing to raise concerns about a possible military confrontation.

Meanwhile, Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng, Beijing’s leading trade negotiator, is currently in the United States for talks with US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent.

During a meeting on Sunday, the two officials also discussed establishing a communication channel to address concerns surrounding artificial intelligence.

The talks will also take place amid the ongoing conflict involving Iran. China has sought to avoid US sanctions related to trade with Tehran, while reports have emerged alleging that Beijing provided Iran with intelligence connected to attacks on US forces.

Xi’s visit is therefore expected to cover a broad range of economic, technological, diplomatic and security issues as Washington and Beijing attempt to manage their differences.
