Unwanted facial hair is a common cosmetic concern for many women. Some choose threading waxing or laser treatments while others try simple home remedies.
However these methods may not work the same way for everyone.
Extra facial hair can sometimes be linked to hormonal changes. Certain medicines including steroids may also cause unusual hair growth. If facial hair suddenly becomes thicker or grows more quickly than usual it is better to speak with a doctor instead of relying only on home remedies.
Sugar and lemon mix
Sugar and lemon are often used in traditional home remedies for unwanted hair. To prepare it mix two teaspoons of sugar and a few drops of lemon juice with half a cup of water.
Boil the mixture and let it cool. Apply it to the unwanted hair for around 20 to 25 minutes then wash the area with cool water.
Lemon and honey wax
Another traditional method uses lemon honey and sugar. Mix one teaspoon of honey two tablespoons of sugar and a few drops of lemon juice.
Heat the mixture for about five minutes and allow it to cool slightly before applying it like wax.
Lemon can irritate the skin so people with sensitive skin should be especially careful and test a small area first.
Egg White sugar and rice flour
A mixture of egg whitesugar and rice flour is also some times used as a home facial hair remedy. Mix two tablespoons of egg white with one tablespoon of sugar and half a teaspoon of rice flour.
Apply the mixture to the affected area and let it dry for 20 to 30 minutes before washing it off with cool water.
Oatmeal and banana scrub
Oatmeal banana can also be used as a gentle homemade scrub. Mash one banana and mix it with two tablespoons of oatmeal.
Apply the mixture to the face and gently massage it in circular movements for about 15 minutes. Wash it off with water afterward.
This may help exfoliate the skin but it should not be considered a proven method for permanently removing facial hair.
Papaya and turmeric
Papaya and turmeric are another traditional combination used for unwanted facial hair. Mash some ripe papaya and add a small pinch of turmeric. Apply the mixture to the face and gently massage for 15 to 20 minutes before washing it off.
Papaya contains an enzyme called papain which has been suggested to affect hair follicles. However there is not enough evidence to consider this a proven way to permanently stop hair growth.
When to seek medical advice
Home remedies may have limited or temporary effects and can sometimes irritate the skin. If facial hair appears suddenly becomes noticeably thicker or is accompanied by other unusual changes consult a healthcare professional to find the possible cause.
