How to keep centipedes away

Finding centipedes in the bathroom, drains or other damp areas of the home is not unusual.

These insects prefer places that are dark moist and easy to hide in. If you keep seeing centipedes simply killing them may not solve the problem.

A better approach is to reduce the moisture and close the places where they may be entering.

Use salt in damp areas

Salt is a simple household option. If centipedes often appear in a damp corner a small amount of salt can be sprinkled there. Salt may help reduce surface moisture making the area less suitable for these insects.

However if the area stays wet because of a leak or dampness fixing the source is more important than using salt.

Try a vinegar solution

A mixture of white vinegar and water can be lightly sprayed around bathroom corners near doors and possible entry points.

Safety warning

Never mix vinegar with bleach or other cleaning chemicals as dangerous gases can form. Also test the mixture on a small hidden area first because vinegar may damage certain surfaces.

Keep the bathroom dry

Keeping the bathroom dry is one of the most useful steps. Wipe up standing water after bathing and improve airflow by using an exhaust fan or opening a window when possible.

Fix leaking pipes taps or other sources of moisture. If the dampness continues centipedes may keep returning.

Keep drains clean and covered

Drains can provide hiding or entry points for insects.  Keep them clean and consider using a suitable drain cover or mesh that still allows water to flow.

Also, check around the drain for small gaps and seal them where needed.

Seal cracks and gaps

Small cracks around bathroom walls,  floors pipes doors and windows can give centipedes places to hide or enter.

Seal these gaps with an appropriate sealant. This can be more effective in the long term than repeatedly spraying insects.

Try neem water

Neem leaves are traditionally used as a natural insect repellent option.

Some people boil neem leaves in water allow the water to cool and use it around bathroom corners. If using neem oil follow the product instructions carefully and avoid applying it where it could come into contact with children or pets.
